How to Identify and Report Fraudulent Calls

In this week’s blog, we’re sharing key security information. Some customers have contacted us after receiving phone calls from people claiming to be with Newton, but who are actually impersonating Newton employees. 

Fraudulent callers have used phone numbers appearing linked to our company to rush people into quick action. Victims have been asked to download unauthorized wallets or apps not affiliated with Newton. This is a scam. It is rare that any action Newton would ask a user to take would need to be done immediately. It’s always a good idea to submit a ticket to our support desk if you are unsure. Below is what Newton will never ask you to do.

What Newton will never ask

While Newton may contact customers by phone in limited, account-specific situations, we will never:

• Ask you to download third-party wallet applications
• Request your password
• Ask for one-time verification codes
• Instruct you to move funds to a wallet during a phone call

If a caller requests any of the above, know that the call is not legitimate.

What Newton will do

When Newton contacts customers, we will always direct you back to the official Newton website or the Newton mobile app for any account-related actions. We will not request sensitive information over the phone.

Unsure whether a communication is legitimate? Take the time you need, pause the interaction and verify directly through official Newton channels.

What to do if you receive a suspicious call

Canadians are typically encouraged to report fraudulent phone calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which collects information on scams and helps law enforcement track fraud patterns.

Reporting suspected fraud helps protect others and supports broader efforts to prevent scams across our country.

How to Share Fraud Reports with Newton

If you would like to share information about a suspected fraudulent call, you may contact Newton’s support team. Reports help us identify and monitor scam activity, but contacting support is not required to keep your account secure.
